Effective date: 14 May 2026
Crumb Scout ("Crumb Scout", "we", "us", or "our") is a consumer app designed to help people manage everyday celiac-related decisions, including ingredient review, eating-out notes, and personal logging. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app handles, how it is used, and the choices available to users.
Scope
This Privacy Policy applies to:
- the Crumb Scout mobile app;
- the Crumb Scout public website, including any waitlist form;
- the Crumb Scout support page and support contact channels; and
- any connected image scanning service you choose to enable for the app.
This Privacy Policy does not apply to third-party websites, cloud storage providers, or sharing destinations that you choose separately.
Information Crumb Scout handles
Depending on how you use the app, Crumb Scout may handle:
- ingredient checks and scan history;
- saved product decisions;
- restaurant notes, saved places, and translation card activity;
- CC Diary entries, including symptoms, severity, timing, and notes;
- app settings, profiles, symptom presets, and reminder preferences; and
- support form submissions you send through the public website; and
- waitlist sign-up details you submit through the public website, such as your name and email address; and
- basic public-website usage information if website analytics is enabled.
Crumb Scout does not require an account in order to use its core features.
How information is used
We use information only as needed to operate and support the app, including to:
- save your app content and preferences;
- generate ingredient, scanner, and diary features you ask the app to run;
- allow you to export, share, or back up your own data;
- receive, review, and respond to support form submissions from the public website;
- store and manage waitlist sign-ups submitted through the public website;
- send launch or product-update emails to people who ask to join the waitlist;
- understand aggregate public-website traffic and improve the support and legal pages if website analytics is enabled;
- respond to support requests, bug reports, or feedback; and
- maintain app reliability, safety, and release quality.
We do not sell personal information.
In the intended shipped state of the app, we do not use advertising SDKs or third-party behavioural tracking SDKs.
Local storage
By default, Crumb Scout stores app data locally on your device.
If you export a backup, share a report, send an email, or save content through another app or service, that information is then handled by the destination you choose.
Image scan processing
Typed and pasted ingredient checks can run locally in the app.
If image scanning is enabled, label images selected from the camera or photo library may be sent to the configured scanner backend so that the image can be processed and a result returned to the app.
Before launch, replace this section with the actual production scanner service details:
- Service provider: [Company or infrastructure provider]
- Purpose: image-to-text and scan-result processing
- Data sent: label image, basic request metadata, and app scan settings needed for analysis
- Data retention: [state retention period, or "not retained beyond processing" if true]
Notifications
If you enable reminders, Crumb Scout may schedule local notifications on your device. Reminder settings are stored locally unless you export or share your app data.
Third-party services
Before publication, list every live third-party service that receives user data. If a category is not used, delete it rather than leaving it vague.
Current intended product state:
- no advertising SDK;
- no behavioural tracking SDK;
- no mandatory account system; and
- no built-in cloud sync.
Planned publication checklist:
- scanner backend: [required if image scanning ships]
- waitlist database: Supabase [if website waitlist sign-up is enabled]
- support form database: Supabase [if website support form is enabled]
- crash reporting: [if enabled]
- analytics: Vercel Web Analytics [if enabled on the public website]
- hosting or CDN for support or policy pages: Vercel [if relevant]
Retention
App content remains on the device until the user edits, deletes, exports, or removes it. Support form submissions and related support records may be retained for operational, security, and customer support purposes for a reasonable business period. Waitlist sign-up records may be retained until relevant launch or product-update communications are complete, or until the list is cleared or updated.
If you add server-side services before launch, state their retention periods here.
Your choices
Users can generally:
- review, edit, or delete app content within the app;
- clear saved scan results, scan history, diary data, and other stored records;
- export their own data;
- disable reminders; and
- contact support with privacy-related questions; and
- request removal of a waitlist sign-up by contacting support.
If you later add accounts or server-side storage linked to an identifiable person, this section should be expanded to explain rights of access, correction, deletion, and data portability where applicable.
Children
Crumb Scout is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children through an account system or child-directed service flow. If a parent or guardian uses the app for a child, they are responsible for deciding what information is entered, exported, or shared.
Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and product-design measures to reduce privacy and security risk. However, no app, device, network, or method of transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
Users should treat exported backups, shared reports, screenshots, and support attachments as sensitive, particularly where health-related notes are included.
International users
If you publish the app outside your home jurisdiction, you should review whether additional regional disclosures are required, including under the GDPR, UK GDPR, or other applicable consumer privacy laws.
Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The published version will always include the current effective date.
